San Francisco, California—with a total population of about 765,000 and nearly 64,000 gay males age 15 or older currently living in the city—may have the largest proportion of gay men among the world's largest cities.

"Despite an overall loss in the population in San Francisco in the last five years, we think there has been an absolute gain in gay men," said William McFarland, of San Francisco's Department of Public Health. "From all the data I have seen . . . it's the gayest city in the world."

Unfortunately, the latest statistics also show that just over one in four (26 percent) of all gay males living in San Francisco are infected with HIV.
