Tuesday 10 November, 2009Old people ARE having sex

You may have seen the new advertisement for Virgin home loans, which features an amorous older couple getting it on in their garden.

Obviously Virgin, who are well known for pushing people's buttons with their advertising, chose the subject matter for a reaction, but it does raise an interesting question: why are we so dismissive of the elderly as sexual creatures?

As I recounted in a post in December, I was at an RSL up the coast last year when a group of about 20 60-plus retirees came in, ruddy with sunburn, laughing like schoolies and proceeded to order 25 dozen Wallis Lake oysters.

"This lot won't need Viagra tonight," said my mate Jack at the time.

We ended up chatting with them and they told us they were on a kayaking holiday, spending each day paddling and it showed; they were bursting with vitality, pinging off their heads on the natural chemicals released by being active, playing grab-arse at the food counter.

I don't know why, but the idea of octogenarians smashing each other in the bedroom just makes me smile but I'll be damned if I can think one one movie or TV show (apart from Cocoon) which features an old person sex scene.

Anyway, take a look at the video for yourself..(which is found on the Virgin site)

...some feed back from this article...

"I have an unkillable libido that I'm certain will still be bubbling away when the rest of me is ready for the crematorium.

I think the problem people have with the concept of old people having sex is that people don't want to confront the fact of their own aging.

You have two choices: die or get old. If one doesn't happen, the other will. Get used to the idea. Once you do, the idea of old people having sex won't seem like such a bad thing at all. " - Devoid

"The only thing I have against old people having sex is that one of them could die whilst coming. Imagine having to deal with a heart attack, two naked (old) people and the arrival of the ambulance..." - Dumped

I'm a 37 woman and I still find 20 - 25 year old guys the ones I'm hot for, just as I did when I was their age. When I'm 50, 60 and 70 (if I make it), I'll probably still feel the same attraction but I won't be attractive to them anymore. It's a cruel trick of nature. Hopefully menopause will steal my sex drive and I won't even care. Otherwise, the Rampant Rabbit will have to do (or whatever it's 2020 offspring will be)! - JJ

I find men my age repulsive sexually JJ (Im 58 and strangely haven't aged much in myself in looks or attitudes - I seem to be a suspended animation or something and everyone comments on this) ...anyway, I never got over being attracted only to men under about 28, its a disaster as I really can't have any sort of meaningful relationship so Im alone.

As my husband aged it became increasingly difficult for me to be in the marriage, and twelve years ago I left him. Arrested development or something ?!? but it's just how it is with me - and it doesn't look like changing. It doesn't really worry me now as Im a loner anyway and have made a life around other things ...and no, I don't go after young guys but I did have a few years where this was a guilty pleasure as believe me there are plenty willing, but its also a disaster in the end and you just have to let it all go - but I still regularly have dreams about lovely young boyfriends and that's fun!! - mmecg
